U.S. Jobless Claims Jump Higher Than Predicted

Posted: Updated:

WASHINTON (AP) -- The United States is seeing the highest unemployment claims in six months.

374,000 people applied for unemployment last week according to the Department of Labor.

This is an increase of 66,000 from the week before, when there were 308,000 claims.

The spike is largely because California processed a backlog of unemployment claims.

Thursday's numbers are 62,000 more than economists had predicted.

Federal workers temporarily laid off due to the shutdown may file for benefits.
