Michigan Could See Layoffs If Government Shutdown Continues

Posted: Updated:

We are getting a better picture of what kind of impact the shutdown could have on state workers whose jobs are dependent on money from Washington.

Wednesday, the state budget office spokesman says Michigan could lay off 15,000 to 20,000 employees if the shutdown rolls into November.

Around $20 billion in the state's budget is federally funded.

Also on the potential chopping block are unemployment checks.

The state would also struggle to subsidize federal programs to help low income families with bills and food assistance.

Notices will go out around October 20th to people who rely on these programs.
