DNR Draining Big Creek Impoundment

State inspectors found signs of weakness in the dam at the Big Creek Impoundment, so they asked the DNR to drain the lake and alleviate the stress until a they find a fix.

The Big Creek Impoundment in Lovells Township west of Grayling along the Crawford-Oscoda County line.

The dam inspector found bubbles coming up from under the berm.

The DNR will slowly drain the lake, about 12 inches per week until the water is no longer running.

The dam is more than 50 years old and many Michigan dams of its age may be next.
