Deadly Manistee Co. Accident Closes M-55 For Hours, Now Back Open

An accident causes a major road in Manistee County to close. 

9&10 News learned that roadblocks are set up at M-55 & M-37 & Warfield Road and M-55 & Snyder Road. The crash happened at Low Bridge Road and M-55 near Wellston in Norman Township.

Police preliminary investigation shows that a 71-year-old male driver of an SUV was traveling west when tried to turn south onto Low Bridge Road. The SUV turned into the path of an oncoming pick-up truck pulling a pop up camper. The driver of the truck was unable to stop for the SUV.

The point of impact was on the passenger door of the SUV, pinning a 77-year-old man in the front seat. Allen Buckenhizer was pronounced dead on the scene. 

Two back seat passenger are listed in critical condition. One was airlifted to Grand Rapids, and the other taken to West Shore Medical Center.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and sustained minor injuries.   

Manistee County Central Dispatch says they anticipate M-55 being closed for up to 5 hours. 

M-55 is now back open.
