Pharmaceuticals, Caffeine Popping Up in Lake Michigan

Posted: Updated:

A variety of things people use everyday are popping up in Lake Michigan and that has experts concerned.

A recent study shows pharmaceuticals, caffeine, and other chemicals are showing up in the lake water. And, experts are learning that has an impact on the environment.

The Great Lakes Water Studies Institute says these chemicals are in the water because more people are consuming pharmaceuticals and caffeine.

The wastewater treatment plant is designed to clean the water, but hasn't evolved to clean out those kinds of chemicals.

People can do their part to help, by taking their prescription and over the counter drugs to a drop off center.
