UPDATE: State Senate Passes Unemployment Legislation to Deny Benefits, House To Vote Again

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Out of work Michiganders could put their unemployment benefits at risk by using illegal drugs.

New legislation approved today in the state Senate and earlier in the House will stop people from getting their benefits if they fail a drug test required by possible employers.

Those employers would not be required to report failed drug tests, but they would be able to give the information to the state.

Recipients would also be cut off if employers report that they refused to take a drug test.

The bill that passed in the Senate must return to the House for a final vote because some changes were made.
