The Michigan State Police has confirmed that Trooper Paul Butterfield of the Hart Post died Monday evening after being shot in the head while conducting a traffic stop.

Troopers say around 6:20 p.m., Butterfield stopped a vehicle on Custer Road near Townline Road in Mason County, around 3 minutes later a passing driver called 9-1-1 to report finding Butterfield on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head.

Butterfield was airlifted to Munson Hospital for emergency surgery, but died in the hospital.

Law enforcement later located the two suspects, a male and female, at a gas station/convenience store in Wellston in Manistee County around 8:25 p.m.

Gunfire was exchanged between the suspects and officers. The male suspect was shot and transported to the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Trooper Butterfield joined the MSP in 1999 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

The investigation is still ongoing.
