BREAKING NEWS: Michigan State Trooper Shot In Mason County

The Michigan State Police confirms that Tpr. Paul Butterfield of the Hart Post has died this evening after being shot while conducting a traffic stop.  

Butterfield was airlifted to Munson Hospital, where he passed away during emergency surgery. He joined MSP in 1999.

Breelynn Martin spoke with the Sheriff who confirmed that 2 suspects have been taken into custody. One of the suspects is injured.

The Michigan State Trooper who was shot is out of the Hart Post. Police say the trooper was shot in the head and is listed to be in critical condition.

The suspects were said to be pulled over initially in a red truck. It is not clear why the traffic stop was initially made or what led to the shooting.

Police are saying that the suspect is no longer at large. 9 and 10 News has received a number of unconfirmed reports that the suspect has been taken into custody.

Breelynn Martin spoke with the Sheriff who confirmed that the trooper was shot in a traffic stop. 

The reason why the stop was made is not clear at this time. 

The shot officer is listed as in serious condition.

9&10 News has learned that a state trooper was shot during a traffic stop in Mason County around the Free Soil area.

We know that it occurred around 7:00 PM tonight, September 9. We are still working to get more details on the condition of the officer.

It is unclear who police are looking for in the shooting of the trooper.
