Forest Service Changes River Permit System for the Pine and Pere Marquette

If you plan on using a canoe or kayak to get around the Pine or Pere Marquette rivers, you will have to pay more next year because of a new fee.

The Huron-Manistee National Forest is moving the permit system online. You will be able to order permits for these rivers through a national reservation system. The U.S. Forest Service says it will improve service and make it easy to get a permit but there is an added cost.

The two rivers have been on a permit system for decades.

"The permit system helps us control how many people are out on the rivers and protect the natural resources," said Recreation Program Manager Kristen Thrall.

The permit system is primarily during the summer months. The two dollar cost for each permit is the same but you will have to pay a six dollar processing fee per order.
