Chinese Lanterns Start Fires In Traverse City

Posted: Updated:

Flame-fueled lanterns are sparking concerns among firefighters in Traverse City.

The Chinese lanterns often used for memorial events have sparked fires in a pine tree at Traverse City State Park and a small garage fire elsewhere in town.

The lanterns are meant to stay adrift in the air until the flame goes out, but that's not always the case.

They are banned in some places, but are currently legal in Michigan.

Use caution when lighting these lanterns.
