Michigan SOS Releases New License Plates For Sale

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) --

Michigan Secretary of State is beginning to sell a new specialty license plate that features the Mackinac Bridge and the "Pure Michigan" tourism logo.

The plate is a fresh take on the standard license plate unveiled earlier this year.

It goes on sale Thursday, and costs $5 more than a standard plate. The new plate replaces the Spectacular Peninsulas plate that was first issued in 2007.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says the Bridge is worth singling out as a tourist attraction and as an engineering accomplishment. It's the third-longest suspension bridge in the world.

The old specialty plate shows the bridge but also includes the state's outline and a city-and-forest skyline.

The old plates will no longer be sold, but motorists can renew them for as long as they wish.
