Lightning Starts Several Fires Near Houghton Lake

Posted: Updated:

Lightning caused damage to buildings in Roscommon County late Tuesday afternoon starting several fires.

A storage building was destroyed but firefighters saved a home and a business in the Houghton Lake area.

Firefighters brought in heavy equipment to knock down an interior wall of the storage building on Chestnut Street.

A home nearby on Columbus Ave. had lightning hit a pine tree starting a fire that damaged part of a wall.

Arnie's Art's 'N Crafts had a hole blasted through the roof by a bolt of lightning. Some computer systems were fried and will need to be replaced. Fortunately none of the merchandise was damaged.

The Roscommon Township Fire Chief says two firefighters had to be treated for exhaustion but will be okay.

Kyle Mitchell and Photojournalist Greg Miller have more on the damage.
