Kaleva Farm Accused Of Underpaying Workers

KALEVA, Mich. (AP) --

A Northern Michigan farm is being investigated by the federal government over a wage dispute.

The Labor Department says Grossnickle Farms in Manistee County classified workers who picked asparagus, cucumbers, and strawberries as independent contractors and paid them at a rate which added up to less than minimum wage.

The farm also is accused of providing poor housing for migrant workers, partly by failing to provide adequate hot water and clean bathrooms.

The government filed a lawsuit Tuesday in federal court.

The farm's operators dispute the allegations and say they will fight the case in court.
