Young Victim Speaks Out About Bear Attack

Posted: Updated:

A brave 12-year-old Northern Michigan girl is speaking out after she was attacked by a black bear.

Abby Wetherell is counting her blessings after being able to walk away from such a frightening attack.

After three nights in the hospital she's back home recovering from multiple puncture wounds, scratches, cuts and bruises.

The bear attack happened Thursday night near Pine Knoll Drive and 30 3/4 roads in Haring Township in Wexford County.

According to Abby, she was jogging in the woods behind her house when she spotted the bear and tried to run from it. The bear chased her down and attacked her. She was able to get up and tried to get away, but that's when the animal came after her again.
The bear finally took off and Abby was able to run home. A neighbor spotted her and signaled Abby's parents.
Abby was transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City where she spent three nights.
According to Abby's mother, she should be fully healed in about six weeks.
9&10's Breelynn Martin and photojournalist Tony Zyber sat down with Abby and have more on the attack.
