A man walked into the Speedway gas station off of M-22 in Elmwood township, demanding money from the cashier early this morning.

The man was surprised to find that the cashier was an off-duty Sheriff's Deputy.

Leelanau Dispatch got a call and local patrol cars were able to tail the suspect towards Traverse City.

Luck was the key word in this case for the Leelanau County Sheriff's Department.

9 & 10's Marisa McKay and photojournalist Jeremy Erickson have more from the sheriff on the good timing of the patrols, and quick thinking from the off-duty deputy.
