UPDATE: Michigan State Police Investigate Incident in Kalkaska County

A man is dead after threatening family members and then barricading himself from police.

Michigan State Police were called to a home in Garfield township in Kalkaska County Friday night. 

Police say a man with mental issues broke into his brother's house. 

He had a rifle and tried to shoot his brother and his wife. 

The couple escaped after a struggle and called police.

When officers arrived the man had barricaded himself inside.

Police sent in a robot and later found him dead from self-inflicted gun shot wounds. 



We now have an update on a story we first brought to you Friday night.

Michigan State Police from the Houghton Lake Post responded to an assault complaint at a home in Garfield Township in Kalkaska County late Friday night.

Troopers say a family member with mental issues had broken into his brother's home and attempted to shoot him and his wife with a rifle.

The two victims escaped the home and called 911.

Troopers say when they arrived the suspect barricaded himself inside the home with the rifle.

The Michigan State Police Emergency Services Team surrounded the home and found that the 58-year-old male died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The incident still remains under investigation.
