Hook and Hunting: Fish Decoys

Posted: Updated:

The art of carving fish decoys became a big business about 40 years ago.

In 1973, a hand-crafted decoy sold for a record $10,000.

Now, there are admirers and craftsman across the country, including right here in Northern Michigan.

A Northern Michigan man turns fish decoys into an art.

Al Nelson from Cadillac has been carving and painting fish decoys since his childhood.

Now, he and a friend want to preserve the art of creating decoys.

They are putting together a carving club in Cadillac so they can pass on the trade and talents to others.

Al hopes club meetings will start up this fall at the Carl T. Johnson Hunt and Fish Center in Cadillac.
