Former Coast Guard Commander Honored by Traverse City and National Cherry Festival

Posted: Updated:

A rare award this afternoon for a man who is serving his country and served northern Michigan.

Traverse City's mayor, Michael Estes, presented a key to the city to the former commander of Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City.

Now a captain, Joe Buzzella ran the station for two years until his term ended last month.

He was awarded a red jacket from the National Cherry Festival Board of Governors for his support of the festival and the cherry industry.

He did not know he was receiving the awards until the mayor called him to the front.

Buzzella will soon head to Washington D.C. where he will be studying at the National War College. He says he will miss serving Traverse City and the Great Lakes communities.
