Renovations On South Manitou Lighthouse At Sleeping Bear Dunes

Posted: Updated:

A Northern Michigan landmark is undergoing renovations thanks to the help of volunteers.

Crews are restoring historic buildings on South Manitou Island over the next few weeks.

The island is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

About 25 volunteers are working on a lighthouse, a one-room school house, and the visitor's center, if there's enough time.

Nine descendants of the island's former lighthouse keepers are helping with the project.
