Watch Out For Deer While Driving

Posted: Updated:

Deer are on the move and you need to be on the lookout.

More than 60,000 car-deer accidents occur each year in Michigan.

And right now is a prime time for them to be active.

The Osceola County Sheriff's Department says the most serious crashes occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer and hit something a lot worse.

Undersheriff Justin Halladay says, "when you do see a deer in the roadway or one runs out in front of you, apply your brakes, don't swerve. Do not swerve, what happens when people swerve is that's when the majority of the serious accidents happen."

If you end up hitting a deer, call 9-1-1 and report your accident and they can also help clean up the scene if necessary.
