Hook and Hunting: Bear Hair Snare

Posted: Updated:

Those lucky enough to get a bear permit for this fall just recently found out, right as the DNR wraps up a major survey to see how many permits should be given out each year.

This is what is called a bear hair snare.

The idea is a bear is attracted to a bacon bait, rubs up against this barbed wire and leaves behind hair samples.

This particular trap today in Wexford County had the bait knocked down and half eaten but sadly came up empty on the bear hair samples.

The DNR will compile their snare samples with harvested bear statistics to determine how many permits will be given out going forward.
