Feedback at 5:00: Healthier School Snacks

Posted: Updated:

Granola bars and dried fruit will soon be replacing chocolate and other candy in school's vending machines.

New federal rules released today called "Smart Snacks in School" set limits to fat, salt and sugar intake in school snacks.

They are meant to help curb childhood obesity in the U.S.

Snacks can only have 200 calories, have to increase protein, whole grains and nutrients.

Schools and food beverage companies have to meet the new standards by July 1, 2014.

That means the new rules would go into effect for the 2014-2015 school year.

Special fundraising events, like bake sales, will still be allowed.

How do you feel about the changes?

It is tonight's "Feedback at 5:00."
