BREAKING NEWS: Supreme Court Strikes Down Federal Defense of Marriage Act

Posted: Updated:

The Supreme Court has just struck down the Federal Defense of Marriage Act that denied benefits to legally married gay couples.

That means legally married, same sex couples cannot be denied the same legal benefits that heterosexual couples receive in California.

These benefits include tax, health, and retirement benefits that are available for other married couples.

The U.S. Supreme Court's decision in this California gay marriage case doesn't have an immediate impact on Michigan's voter-approved ban.

The court did not making a sweeping statement on the legality of gay marriage today, it simply let a trial judge's decision stand that ruled the California ban is unconstitutional.

Michigan's gay marriage ban is the subject of a lawsuit in Detroit federal court.
