Nearly 43 years after a northern Michigan soldier was thought to have died in the Vietnam War, his remains have been identified.

Army specialist John Burgess of Kingsley was killed in the war on June 30th, 1970 when his helicopter was shot down.

Three others onboard also died.

Their remains were found shortly after the crash, but no remains were ever found of Burgess until now.

Investigators identified Burgess through forensic and circumstantial evidence.

The Department of Defense says he will be buried with full military honors.

His family says they have yet to be contacted by the Department of Defense about this.

His brother says they've been waiting for a long time for this moment, and are in complete shock.

For local veterans, they say it's closure to have one of their own finally home.

9 & 10's Meredith Barack and photojournalist Jeff Blevins spoke to local veterans about what the identification means to them.
