Free Soil Says Goodbye to Century Old School

Posted: Updated:

After one hundred years in a small northern Michigan community, one school district will soon be no more than a memory.

Financial difficulties due to declining enrollment are behind the schools demise.

Free Soil schools in Mason County will no longer exist after July 1st when the village will take over the property.

In 2007, the school graduated their last high school class.

The elementary school then closed its doors in 2011.

This year, the school district was annexed to Mason County Eastern school district.

Tomorrow, the school will host a celebration to reminisce about decades of memories.

9 & 10's Meredith Barack and photojournalist Jeff Blakeman spent some time at the school to see how they're preparing to say goodbye.
