New court documents show the White House secretly monitored a Washington journalist.

The FBI considered James Rosen a "criminal co-conspirator" even though he was not charged with any crime.

Rosen promised to protect a source of his for a scoop he got in 2009, reporting that North Korea would respond to sanctions with more nuclear tests.

The information was considered classified, so the FBI launched an investigation to uncover the source.

Agents monitored Rosen's movements in and out of the state department, searched his emails, and went through his cell phone records.

Recently, the Associated Press also had phone records taken on grounds of national security.
