UPDATE: Mecosta County Man Dies While Helping Another Driver

Posted: Updated:

A Mecosta County man is dead after stopping on the side of the road to see if another driver needed help.

The accident happened on M-20 just west of Sherman Road in Broomfield Township last night.

The Isabella County Sheriff's Department says a car pulled over to call in a dead deer on the side of the road.

Jaremy Stiles of Big Rapids pulled up behind the other car to see if they needed help. As he was walking back to his car after checking on the other driver, another car saw the deer but not the cars. That man swerved to miss the animal and ended up running Stiles over.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver will likely not face charges unless speed, alcohol, or drugs were a factor. The sheriff says right now the department has no indication that any of these factors led to the crash.

Kyle Mitchell and Photojournalist Tony Zyber have the latest on the investigation.

There will be a memorial and luncheon for Stiles at Trinity Fellowship EFC in Big Rapids on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Jaremy's family has set up a website where you can donate money to help fund funeral costs.
