Feedback at 5:00: BRCA Gene

Posted: Updated:

Actress Angelina Jolie just revealed she had a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carries a gene that increases the risk for breast cancer.

Women who have inherited the BRCA mutation are about 5 times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who doesn't have it.

The gene also increases a woman's risk for ovarian cancer, so many women choose both removal of their breasts and ovaries to reduce the chances.

It's estimated that about 10% of all breast cancers are related to the BRCA gene mutations.

In this Feedback at 5:00, we asked if you would have a major surgery, such as this, if you knew it meant lowering your risk for cancer.
