SPECIAL REPORT: Cold Water Warnings - Northern Michigan's News Leader

SPECIAL REPORT: Cold Water Warnings

Posted: Updated:

Every year around this time boaters flood to the waters of our region.

Eager to get out on that first hot spring day, sometimes their complacency can have deadly consequences.

Last Spring David Dickerson, an expert boater, headed out on Omena Bay near Grand Traverse Bay.

He set out in his kayak with his trusty dog, but sadly David didn't return.

Since his death, David's sister Rachel North is on a crusade with the help of the Coast Guard to help boaters understand that just because the air is warm doesn't mean the water is too.

Drowning and hypothermia is a certain threat even in the Spring when temperatures tip into the 70s.

So, being prepared for the water temperature and not the air temperature is key for even the most experienced boater.
