Northern Michigan Township May Lose Library Because of Budget Cuts

Posted: Updated:

A Northern Michigan township has to cut their budget, and their library is in jeopardy.

Chase Township in Lake County has to make a major decision, to keep their library or their fire protection contracts with the Reed City Fire Department.

Community members are taking a stand and voicing their opinion about the issue.

The library is already petitioning to stay alive, but several people believe the fire contract is more important.

The township supervisor is trying to come up with a win-win situation but it's not looking good.

The supervisor hopes to add the fire contract renewal to a millage for the August election and raise funds on the side to keep the library open.

But ultimately the decision is up to the community.

A final decision about the library will be made at their next board meeting, May 8th.
