Great Lakes Ice Breaking Operation Comes To an End

With ice melting away throughout the Great Lakes the largest ice breaking operation came to an end today.

Operation "Taconite" started on December 17th and lasted 131 days.

During the operation nine U.S. Coast Guards and one Canadian ice breaker spent 3,914 hours in the ice and did over 800 boat assists.

Shipping companies were able to move several million tons of iron ore, coal, limestone, road salt and petroleum during the operation period.
