Michigan Marijuana Decriminalization Bill Introduced

Posted: Updated:

Legislators in Lansing have proposed a bill to decriminalize the marijuana in Michigan.

The bill would replace criminal charges with fines for possessing small amounts of marijuana.

9&10 News spoke with people on both sides of the controversial issue.

Michigan State Police is not on board with the idea of decriminalizing marijuana. According to MSP, one issue is it would place personnel in a very difficult situation of having to deal with a federal government mandate that remains in effect for marijuana.

On the other hand, advocates say no one should have to worry about going to jail for having small amounts of the drug.

Similar decriminalization laws have been implemented in more than a dozen other states.

The bill is awaiting possible hearings.
