Hook and Hunting: Trout Opener - Northern Michigan's News Leader

Hook and Hunting: Trout Opener

Posted: Updated:

The last Saturday in April is a day marked on many fisherman's calendars.

The 27th is the traditional Statewide Trout Opener.

9&10 News found some fishermen testing their luck today at the Bear River in Petoskey.

It's one of the exceptions, where rainbow trout are fair game all year long.

A DNR fisheries biologist says with this year's late spring, fishermen may encounter different conditions than what they're used to because of higher water levels, but he expects a good trout season.

In the lower peninsula, the inland walleye, northern pike and muskellunge season also starts Saturday, as well as the catch-and-immediate-release bass season.

As a reminder from the DNR, don't forget your new fishing license.
