A new tourism forecast predicts positive growth this year in northern Michigan.
The Michigan State University forecast shows a more than 5 percent growth in spending statewide this year, and a 3 percent increase in the number of visitors.
Many hotels in Traverse City say they have been seeing growth for several years. The Old Mission Inn has seen a jump in reservations. The inn is ahead of schedule for bookings. The Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau says it is not surprised by the growth.
"Traverse City has had some good numbers as well. We make up approximately 10 percent of the state's total visitor traffic so we figure when we're doing well Michigan as a whole is doing well," said Mike Norton.
Another new report says Pure Michigan brought in 3.8 million visitors to the state who spent more than a billion dollars. The most successful year in the history of the campaign.
