Boston Bombing: How a Traumatic Event Affects the Mind

Posted: Updated:

The act of terror that happened in Boston will not only have physical affects on those who attended the event, but psychological affects as well.

According to Doctor Jim Benthem of Life Skills Psychological Services in Cadillac, a traumatic event like what happened in Boston can change your world view and can have you no longer feeling as safe as you did before.

People who were at the marathon may suffer from a condition known as post traumatic stress disorder, which happens when you're exposed to events way out of the ordinary. Symptoms include nightmares, flashbacks, and strong emotional reactions that can be triggered by events similar to the trauma.

Viewers of the bombings in Boston can also suffer from symptoms. To combat these types of feelings, Doctor Benthem says its important to talk about how you feel and to go back and face your fears.
