Northern Michigan Tax Preparers Busy With IRS Deadline

Posted: Updated:

Tax preparers across northern Michigan are busy making sure you will not have to pay a penalty to the IRS this year.

April 15th is the last day to file your income taxes.

The manager of the H& R Block in Cadillac says they started seeing a lot of calls from customers last week setting up appointments.

There were several changes this year on the federal and state level that will mean smaller returns for some. The state changes could impact people the most.

"It affected retirement. It affected senior citizens on the exemption amount that they can deduct, property taxes was a big item. If you make over $51,000 you do not qualify for a property tax credit," said Karen Vanderwal of H&R Block.

Another major change is the scaling back of the earned income tax credit from 20 percent to six percent.

The H&R Block we spoke with is accepting walk-ins between appointments but are basically booked for the day.

If you cannot make the deadline, tax preparers say you should put in for an extension so you will only have to pay interest instead of also paying a penalty fee.
