Bellaire Woman in Prison for Tax Evasion

Posted: Updated:

9&10 News has just learned a Bellaire woman is going to prison for tax evasion.

In October, Elaine Dawson pleaded guilty to the charges she faced.

Prosecutors say she failed to pay nearly one million dollars in corporate and personal income taxes between 2004 and 2010. She owned theaters in Bellaire, Petoskey, Gaylord, Mackinaw City and Cheboygan.

Court records show Dawson routinely under-reported sales numbers and skimmed cash from the unreported sales for personal use. She must now pay all the back taxes, plus fraud penalties to the IRS.

She was also sentenced to one year in prison.
