Soo Locks Open in Sault Ste. Marie

Posted: Updated:

After a two and a half month wait, boat lovers off all ages can now see the Great Lakes freighters move through the Soo Locks.

The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie officially opened at 12:01 this morning. This started the 2013 great lakes shipping season.

More than three dozen people gathered in sub-freezing temperatures to watch and photograph one of the largest ships on the great lakes.

The one thousand thirteen foot Paul R. Tregurtha made its way into the locks.

While the bigger poe lock is open for business, the smaller MaCarthur lock will open up once the winter maintenance is completed.
