Badger Back in Business

Posted: Updated:

The S.S. Badger in Ludington won't be docked for long but a lot of questions remain about its future.

The S.S. Badger carferry was shut down in December because it needed to renew its federal permit or invest in a cleaner fuel.

The ferry and the Environmental Protection Agency announced a deal yesterday to allow the ferry to operate this year.

Under a new agreement with the EPA,  the carferry will have to dump 15% less coal ash during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The ship must install a new system by 2015 that prevents any coal ash from getting into the lake.

9&10's Katie Boomgaard talked with local businesses about what this means for the area.
