UPDATE: Commissioners Meet to Discuss Onaway Police Department

Posted: Updated:

Tonight, a group plans to present the Onaway City Commission with a petition to save the city's police department.

The city of Onaway is contemplating the future of their one-man police department as they look at ways to save money.

Talks are underway between the city of Onaway and the county, about entering into a contract.

At tonight's 5:30 meeting, the commissioners will vote on the language of the agreement.

Nothing is finalized yet, but if the agreement is eventually approved the city would pay the county yearly, until an opening within the Sheriff's Department comes up, and the current chief would be rolled into that position.

After that, the city would put money toward nighttime patrol.
