Feedback at 5:00: High School Foreign Language Requirements

Posted: Updated:

If you want to graduate high school in Michigan, you have to complete a foreign language requirement.

But a bill sponsored by Republican State Representative Phil Potvin, from Cadillac, would change that.

It would let students meet required classes such as algebra 2 and foreign language requirements by including computer science instead.

Supporters say it would mean more flexibility for students who choose a technical career path.

The Michigan Department of Education is against the bill.

Right now, students must take a foreign language from freshman to senior year in order to graduate.

Starting with students who entered 3rd grade in 2006, foreign language study counts in grades kindergarten through 8th.

For tonight's "Feedback at 5:00," we asked what you thought about the proposed changes?
