New Census Numbers Shed Light On County Populations

Posted: Updated:

Populations across northern Michigan are growing and shrinking.

Newly released census numbers are providing an inside look at population increases and decreases across the region.

According to the report, more than half of Michigan counties saw a decrease in population from July 2011 to July 2012, which is an increase from 2010 to 2011.

One county that decreased in population is Roscommon County, falling 0.84%.

The Economic Development Coordinator for Roscommon County says in addition to lost businesses, schools in the county have also lost students and teachers.

Despite the decrease, Roscommon county is working to bring people back to the area.

On the other hand, another northern Michigan county saw an increase in population. Missaukee county saw an increase of 0.56%.

According to Lake City Chamber of Commerce, the county has had several new businesses open and more are expected to open this summer.

Even though more counties lost population than gained, northern Michigan is still one of the most popular vacation destinations for people in the state.
