McLaren Encourages Colorectal Cancer Screenings

Posted: Updated:

March is colorectal cancer awareness month, and one northern Michigan hospital is doing its part to educate people, especially those most at risk.

McLaren Cancer Institute, with locations at McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey and McLaren Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant, are working to raise awareness about the cancer.

Doctors stress the importance of screenings.

There are a few types of tests, including one that can be done right at home.

McLaren Cancer Institute is giving out free cancer screening kits to those who qualify.

A doctor with McLaren says colorectal cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for non-smokers, but he says if caught early, it doesn't have to be that way.

Doctors recommend anyone 50 or older to be regularly screened.

If you have a family history of the disease, you may need to start sooner.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, during 9&10 News at 5:00 and 6:00 you will be able to call the station and speak with representatives from Mclaren to see if you qualify for one of the colorectal cancer screening kits.
