BREAKING NEWS: A Pope Has Been Chosen

Posted: Updated:

White smoke has emerged from the Sistine Chapel at St. Peters Square meaning that the cardinals had come to a decision on who the next Pope would be.

Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina has been named Pope, and he is taking the name of Pope Francis I.

He is the first non-European Pope, and the first South American Pope.

Until last year the 76 year old Pope Francis I was the archbishop of Buenos Aries before stepping down because of his age.

Cardinals voted 5 times before reaching a decision.

The Pope Francis I appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica after a church official made the announcement.

He told the crowds in Vatican City that "the duty of the conclave was to appoint a bishop of Rome, and it seems to me that my brother cardinals have chosen one who is from far away, but here I am."

After the second round of voting, black smoke once again emerged from the Sistine Chapel.

There is still no decision on who will be the next Pope.

The cardinals returned to the Apostolic Palace for Mass this morning.

There will be four votes throughout the day today with two in the morning and two in the afternoon.

The voting process for a new Pope is getting underway at the Vatican.

The world's 1.2 billion Catholics could have a new leader as early as today.

Still, it's highly doubtful that a new Pope would be chosen so soon.

115 cardinals are taking their oaths of secrecy as they prepare to start their discussions on who should be the next Pope.

After a pre-conclave Mass at St. Peter's Basilica, the cardinal-electors made their way into the Sistine Chapel chanting prayers.

Once the election process begins, the only clue we will have as to what is happening inside is the color of the smoke that is periodically released from a copper chimney.

Black smoke means there is no decision yet, and white smoke means they have chosen the next Pope.
