UPDATE: Future of Wexford County Animal Shelter Still Unknown

Posted: Updated:

The future of the Wexford County Animal Shelter is being discussed again tonight.

The meeting will involve the county, the city of Cadillac, and the public.

It's all about who should be in charge of the shelter and animal control.

This has been an ongoing debate after allegations of animal abuse.

The state found no evidence of wrong-doing at the shelter.

9&10 News will have continuing coverage of the meeting tonight at 11:00.

A concerned community, still hoping to find a solution for an animal shelter under fire.

Today, the Wexford County Sheriff told 9 and 10 News a state veterinarian with the Department of Agriculture found no wrong doing at the animal shelter.

Back in January, a former worker said the shelter puts animals down without sedating them first, as state law requires.

The Wexford County Board of Commissioners listened to many express their opinion about the shelter's future at tonight's meeting.

One local organization, Pine Cone Farm, presented the possibility of taking over the shelter themselves.

Others say the shelter should continue to be run by the county, just not as a branch of the Sheriff's Department.

Commissioners say it will be months before any changes could be made.

There are still animals at the shelter that are available for adoption.

9 & 10's Meredith Barack and photojournalist Jeff Blakeman were at the meeting to hear more on the future of the shelter.
