Fracking Concerns in Kalkaska County

Posted: Updated:

Three deep fracking wells exploring for natural gas in Kalkaska County are raising concern because they consume so much water.

Records show the wells run by Encana Oil and Gas Wells in Excelsior Township have used 42 million gallons of water in the past two years.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality monitors water use at the wells.

Despite concern from some community members, the DEQ says the wells' groundwater use fits within the range of safe withdrawals.
