Grand Traverse County To Reinstate Police Presence in Schools

Posted: Updated:

More protection is ahead for Traverse City Area Schools.

Last night, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff proposed an improvised Liaison Officer Program to the County Commission and it was approved.

When fully staffed, the Sheriff's Department has 24 officers.

They proposed two of them be assigned to work more closely with the school district.

It's something the County Commission agreed seems long overdue, after the previous program was cut because of budget issues.

Sheriff Tom Bensley says, "It's important to get that relationship back with the schools, with the students, and with the staff at the schools.  It might not be quite as heavy, might not be quite as thick as it used to be, but it's a start."

The Sheriff hopes to get this program started as soon as possible, but they are short staffed by two deputies right now.

One they fill those positions, they will move forward with the program.
