Petoskey Steel Drum Band Heading for Mardi Gras - Northern Michigan's News Leader

Petoskey Steel Drum Band Heading for Mardi Gras

Posted: Updated:

Sixteen years ago band director Barry Bennett decided he wanted his drum line at Petoskey High School to have a unique sound.

He introduced the steel drum to his ensemble and it has grown to become a famous summertime staple in Northern Michigan.

The Petoskey Steel Drum Band is wrapping up practice this week preparing for a trip to New Orleans, LA where they will march in three Mardi Gras parades this weekend.

It's the seventh time the band will make the trip to the bayou.

Only seniors and juniors are invited and they take the trip every other year so every student only gets one shot to go and then they pass down how much fun it is to the younger grades.

9&10's Eric Lloyd and photojournalist Tony Zyber were there for their final tune up and have more details.
