UPDATE: Help for Mecosta County Flood Victims

Posted: Updated:

There is now a shelter for victims who have been displaced from their homes by the flood in Mecosta County.

Victims can go to the First Methodist Church at 304 Elm Street in Big Rapids.

As everyone waits for the water levels to drop, emergency responders are doing what they can to help.

Crews in special suits went door to door on Thursday, helping people retrieve medications and other important belongings.

The sheriff's department used a hovercraft to safely move along the river and assess the damage.

"We're going house to house, taking photos of each house with an address, checking water levels at each of the homes to forward those to our damage assessment team," said Sheriff Todd Purcell.

Red Cross volunteers helped five families find shelter and brought in food.

If you want to help, the Red Cross says cash donations allow them to help the most people.

Kyle Mitchell and Photojournalist Jeff Blakeman have more on how first responders are helping people displaced by the floods.
