Update: Officials to Evaluate Flood Damage from Muskegon River

Wednesday, the Muskegon River overflowed, flooding parts of Mecosta County. As many as 60 homes remain evacuated.

Thursday morning they are focusing on breaking up the ice jam that is causing the high water.

The flooding started around 3:00 Wednesday afternoon.

Dozens of homes along 183 Avenue on the Big Rapids and Mecosta Township line.

Many who live along the river were rescued from their homes by boat. Some refused to evacuate despite the rising water.

Five families are currently staying at the shelter set up by the Red Cross.

Officials will be on scene Thursday to begin assessing the damage.

Many who live along the river say they have seen it flood, but never to this extreme, and there could be more to come.
